September 2026 belongs to one edit: the ChatGPT 1980s photo trend. Its searches in India were effectively zero before September; this month “1980s photo prompt chatgpt” alone reached about 224,000, according to Ahrefs. Underneath it, the steady trends kept running: prompt seen girl and boy portraits, couple edits, and the same portraits made in Gemini.

What a trending prompt (or editing prompt) is
A trending prompt is the text behind a viral AI photo edit. Someone posts a restyled portrait and shares the words they typed; everyone else pastes them into ChatGPT or Gemini with their own photo and gets the same look with their own face. An editing prompt is the same thing without the trend: any instruction that tells an AI app how to change a photo you upload. Image prompt, photo prompt, viral prompt, copy-paste AI prompt — all the same idea. In India, “editing prompt” is searched about 63,900 times a month and “trending prompt” about 26,900, according to Ahrefs.
Two things the prompt lists leave out. A prompt is plain text, so nobody should charge you for one. And the prompt describes the picture, but the app draws it: ChatGPT and Gemini run different image models that fail in different ways, as the engine section shows.
Where these prompts come from
All 14 prompts on this page are ours, written for this month’s trends; we are not republishing anyone else’s, and we have not run them ourselves yet. The app advice comes from our 90-image benchmark and our prompt seen test, where 13 trend prompts went through both ChatGPT and Gemini with the same reference photos.
How to use a trending prompt
From copy to posted in about a minute
- Pick a prompt below and tap Copy.
- Open ChatGPT or Gemini in a new chat.
- Attach one photo: face sharp and facing the camera, even light, no sunglasses or beauty filter. The family prompt needs everyone in one photo; the pet prompt needs a photo of you and one of your pet.
- Paste and send, unchanged the first time.
- Check the face first. If it is not you, regenerate or switch apps; rewording the scene will not bring your face back.
- One look per chat. In our prompt seen test, a red saree from one prompt turned up uninvited in the next.

Festival prompts: Dussehra, Karwa Chauth and Diwali
Navratri has its own set of garba, dandiya and Durga Puja prompts on our prompt seen page. These three cover what follows: Dussehra on 20 October, Karwa Chauth on 29 October and Diwali on 8 November 2026. None puts a deity in the frame; if you add your own puja idol, place yourself beside it, never on it, and add “Keep the idol unchanged.” before the face-lock line.
1. Dussehra evening, Ravan dahan behind you
Edit the uploaded photo into a Dussehra evening portrait: I stand at the front of a crowded open ground at dusk in a mustard kurta and a sleeveless brocade jacket, a towering Ravan effigy bursting into flames far behind me, fireworks and drifting sparks against a deep orange sky, the crowd in silhouette, warm firelight catching one side of my face, cinematic wide shot. Keep the effigy far back: close up, it competes with your face. For the family, change “I stand” to “we stand together” and use the face-lock line from prompt 11.
2. Karwa Chauth moonrise on the rooftop
Edit the uploaded photo into a Karwa Chauth night portrait: I stand on a rooftop terrace in a deep red bandhani saree with gold jewellery and mehendi on my hands, holding a decorated steel sieve and a puja thali with a lit diya, a bright moon rising over the city behind me, cool moonlight mixed with warm diya glow, fairy lights along the railing, a calm and hopeful mood. 3. Diwali sparklers on the balcony
Edit the uploaded photo into a Diwali night portrait: I stand on a balcony in a deep purple silk kurta set with gold earrings, holding a lit sparkler that draws a glowing golden trail through the air, the city behind me dotted with string lights and a few distant fireworks, warm sparkler light on my face against the cool blue of the night, a delighted smile, slight motion blur in the sparks, crisp festive colours. Keep my face exactly the same as the uploaded photo — do not alter my facial features.

90s, horror and film-still prompts
Three looks rising alongside the 80s trend. The 90s is the obvious next decade (“90s prompt trending”, about 25,500 searches in September, according to Ahrefs). Horror is the surprise (“prompt seen horror girl”, about 12,300): suspense, not gore — the fear comes from the light. The film still is the easiest to make look expensive.
4. The 90s hill-station snapshot with a date stamp
Turn the uploaded photo into a real 1990s holiday snapshot of me at a misty hill-station viewpoint: a hand-knitted cardigan over a salwar kameez, a bright woollen cap, pine trees and an iron railing behind me, shot on a cheap film point-and-shoot with the flash firing in daylight, slightly overexposed colour-negative film, soft corners, and an orange digital date stamp reading '98 10 24' in the bottom right corner. 5. Horror film still: the last train
Turn the uploaded photo into a still from an Indian horror film: I stand alone on an empty railway platform at two in the morning, one flickering tube light overhead, fog drifting over the tracks, the doors of a completely empty train standing open beside me, a station clock with no readable numbers, cold green-grey light, my reflection in the dark train window, suspenseful and eerie, no blood or gore. Keep my face exactly the same as the uploaded photo — do not alter my facial features.

6. Cinematic film still: train window at dawn
Turn the uploaded photo into a still from an Indian art-house film: I sit by the open window of a moving train at dawn, gazing out, a small steel tumbler of tea in my hand, fields and electricity poles blurring past, soft blue morning light on my face, a wide cinematic frame with thin black bars top and bottom, a muted teal and amber grade, fine film grain, no subtitles or text. Keep my face exactly the same as the uploaded photo — do not alter my facial features.
The black bars say “cinema” before anything else. “No subtitles or text” matters: in our prompt seen test, Gemini printed a real camera brand’s logo on the drums unasked.
Instagram aesthetic prompts
The quiet edits that fill Instagram grids between the big trends: less costume, more light and texture. “Instagram trending photo prompt” gets about 3,500 searches a month in India, according to Ahrefs, but these looks do not date the way a trend does.
7. Aesthetic mirror selfie
Turn the uploaded photo into an aesthetic mirror selfie: I stand in front of a tall arched mirror in a softly lit bedroom, holding a plain phone with no logo at chest height so my whole face shows in the reflection, an oversized white shirt with wide-leg beige trousers, warm fairy lights and a potted plant behind me, late-afternoon sun through sheer curtains, natural skin texture, a relaxed candid pose. The phone sits at chest height on purpose: any part of your face the app cannot see is a part it has to invent.
8. Instant-photo memory wall
Create an aesthetic photo of a bedroom wall covered in square instant photos with thick white borders, pinned with tiny wooden clips to strings of warm fairy lights; each photo shows me in a different candid moment — laughing, on a beach, holding a coffee, at a concert, walking in the rain — soft evening lamplight, cosy mood, no logos or text. People call this the “Polaroid” look; we leave the brand out, because a name invites a logo. Five small faces are five chances to drift, so zoom in before you post.
9. Pencil sketch on the desk
Turn the uploaded photo into a realistic graphite pencil sketch of me on textured off-white sketchbook paper: fine cross-hatching in the shadows, soft smudged shading on my cheeks and hair, a few loose construction lines left around the edges, the open sketchbook lying on a wooden desk beside a pencil and an eraser, soft natural window light. Swap the medium: “a loose watercolour”, “a thick oil painting” or “an Indian miniature painting with a patterned border”. The desk makes it look like real artwork, not a filter.
10. Vintage travel postcard
Turn the uploaded photo into a vintage travel postcard: me standing on a Goa beach beside a red-and-white wooden fishing boat, palm trees and a whitewashed hilltop church behind me, bright 1960s printed colours with slightly off-register ink, the words 'GREETINGS FROM GOA' in big bold retro letters across the sky, a thin white border and softly worn corners. Family, pet and birthday prompts
“Family photo prompt” (about 6,800 searches a month in India) and “birthday prompt for girl” (about 7,200) sit just under this month’s big trends, according to Ahrefs. Both are harder than they look: a family has many faces to keep, and a birthday shoot has balloons, a cake and a flame competing for the light.
11. Family portrait in the courtyard
Turn the uploaded photo into a warm family portrait of all of us together in a sunlit courtyard, a wall of pink bougainvillea behind us: coordinated outfits in cream and sage green, the eldest seated in the middle on a cane chair, everyone else standing close around them with a hand on a shoulder, soft late-afternoon light, relaxed and genuine smiles, the polish of a professional family photoshoot. Keep all of our faces exactly the same as the uploaded photo — do not alter our facial features.
Every extra person is another face that can drift, so use a photo where everyone is sharp and check each face. We have no data on groups larger than two; if one face keeps changing, try the other app.
12. Pet-and-owner portrait
Using both uploaded photos, create a portrait of me and my pet together: we sit on a sunlit window seat piled with cushions, my pet curled on my lap and looking at the camera, soft morning light through a white curtain, an open book on the sill, a calm and cosy mood, natural colours, shallow depth of field. Keep my pet looking exactly like the animal in the second photo. Keep my face exactly the same as the first uploaded photo — do not alter my facial features.
Attach your photo first and your pet’s second. Without the pet line, nothing tells the app to keep your pet’s markings rather than draw a generic dog or cat.
13. Midnight birthday surprise
Edit the uploaded photo into a candid midnight birthday surprise: I am sitting up in bed in comfortable pyjamas, caught mid-laugh with my hands over my mouth as friends lean in from the edges of the frame carrying a cake with lit candles, their faces out of focus, fairy lights on the wall, the room dark except for the candles and a phone torch, a little flash blur, warm tones. Everyday photo editing prompts for ChatGPT
Not every edit is a trend. “ChatGPT prompt for photo editing” gets about 20,600 searches a month in India, according to Ahrefs, and much of that is people after a practical fix. Here is one full prompt for the most common job, then lines to add for smaller ones.
14. Clean professional headshot
Edit the uploaded photo into a clean professional headshot: head and shoulders, facing the camera with a relaxed, confident smile, a well-fitted navy blazer over a plain white shirt, a smooth light-grey studio background, soft even light from the front with a gentle fill, sharp focus on the eyes, natural skin texture with no heavy retouching, ready for a work profile. Keep my face exactly the same as the uploaded photo — do not alter my facial features.
For women, write “a tailored blazer over a plain top”, or whatever you wear to work.
Quick fixes: add one line before the face-lock line

Every prompt here is built from the same parts, so you can turn any look you spot on Instagram into your own prompt. Specifics matter more than order: “make it aesthetic” gives the app nothing to draw.

The face-lock line: “Keep my face exactly the same as the uploaded photo — do not alter my facial features.” For two, “both of our faces”; for a family, “all of our faces”. It improves the odds; no app guarantees it.
- It does not look like you: use a sharper photo and regenerate; after three misses, switch apps. In the prompt seen test, each app kept faces the other lost.
- It added things you did not ask for: in that test ChatGPT added a bindi in 2 edits and Gemini in 4. Say what you do not want.
- It looks like a filter: name a light source and a texture, such as “on-camera flash” or “fine film grain”.
ChatGPT or Gemini for trending prompts?
The two apps run different models: ChatGPT uses OpenAI’s GPT Image and Gemini uses Google’s Nano Banana. In our 90-image benchmark of ten tools they tied for first at 9.4 but won different things. In the prompt seen test, 13 trend prompts went through both with the same two reference photos, first output kept. That is the evidence here; the 14 prompts on this page have not been through it yet.

How we keep this page current
AI photo trends turn over fast: the 80s edit went from nothing to the biggest prompt search in India within a month. So this page is a noticeboard in front of a reference shelf.
- Every month we pull India search data from Ahrefs, note what rose and faded, and rewrite this month’s trends and the festival dates. The note at the top of that section says when (currently 25 September 2026).
- Big trends get their own page, as the 80s trend and prompt seen did; smaller ones get prompts here.
- Old prompts stay. A prompt still works after its trend fades, so faded ones move down rather than disappear.
- Festival dates are checked against Drik Panchang, because they move every year.
- Results only when we have them. When we run these prompts through ChatGPT and Gemini, the results will go under each one on the prompt seen rules: same reference photos, first output, no re-rolls. Until then, treat them as carefully written starting points, not proven recipes.

Before you upload your photo
- Use ChatGPT or Gemini directly. Trends attract sites and apps offering to make the edit for you. The prompt is plain text; a middleman only adds another place for your face to end up.
- Ask before you edit someone else, relatives and partners included. Putting someone into a romantic or horror scene without asking is exactly the misuse these tools get criticised for.
- Say it is AI. A convincing 1998 snapshot or family portrait can be taken for a real photo years later.
- Think twice about children’s photos. These prompts are written for adults, and once a child’s face is uploaded you have less control over where it ends up.
